MERCURY by Margot LiveseyKirkus Star MERCURY by Margot Livesey Another probing study of the way character shapes our destinies from the author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy (2012), etc. It’s perhaps a bit much to make Donald an optometrist, given that he confesses shortly after disclosing his occupation that he failed to see wife Viv’s obsession with a horse named Mercury until it was much too late. But Livesey, a Scottish transplant whose brilliant novels are underknown in her adopted country, rings so many dazzling changes on the subjects of eyesight, hindsight, and blinkered sight that she may be forgiven the whiff of contrivance in her setup. Donald’s personality is utterly credible: cautious, precise, Scottish-ly phlegmatic yet roiled by deep feelings of loss. They go back to boyhood, when his family’s move from Edinburgh to Boston cost Donald his best friend, and have been elevated to devastating levels by the recent death of his father after a long siege of Parkinson’s disease. The intensity of Donald’s attachment to his father is palpable but never really explained; Livesey has a healthy respect for the mysteries of the human heart. Viv, who narrates the novel’s middle section, is rendered with somewhat less nuance: her lifelong need to be the best, focused on riding in adolescence and only temporarily derailed to a career in mutual funds, re-emerges with a scary edge when Mercury arrives at the stable she now runs with her best friend, Claudia. It’s hard to be entirely sympathetic when she tells Donald (accurately), “Since your dad died you’ve been MIA,” as we see Viv driven into secrecy and lies by her hysterical need to make Mercury a champion and herself a star. But Donald also keeps secrets, one of which contributes to a ghastly act of misdirected violence that leads to a dance of regret, recrimination, and indecision bringing further losses for husband and wife. A sharply sketched supporting cast adds to the depth and cumulative power of this grimly great novel. Uncharacteristically dark, yet more evidence of Livesey’s formidable gifts. Pub Date: Sept. 27th, 2016 ISBN: 978-0-06-243750-1

ARCADE by Drew Nellins Smith ARCADE by Drew Nellins Smith Email this review KIRKUS REVIEW A Texas-based debut novel about a man controlled by his sexuality. When Sam finally realizes that his sexual orientation might be different from what society expects of him, he resorts to the internet to find satisfaction. But the Missed Connections vertical on Craigslist is not enough for him. To his surprise, he happens upon a roadside arcade that guarantees anonymity to its customers, that allows for a quick release, and that carries the potential for a connection. For all intents and purposes a XXX video store, the arcade is where the confused Sam soon spends most of his days and nights. There, he meets a cast of men, ranging from a “tweaker” to “a big bull of man,” and engages in a variety of activities—most of which will elicit chills and a raised eyebrow. “I could have something like an encounter [at the arcade], a vicarious experience completely free of any fears of infection or the face-to-face intimacy I didn’t know how to process,” Sam says. The novel oscillates between telling Sam’s story outside of the arcade and framing it only in terms of his homosexuality (“I had seen porn magazines before…I remember shaking all over and coming in my pants….I kept shaking after that, searching my room for a hiding spot where no one would look….That was the moment when I knew…I might really be the kind of person you weren’t supposed to be”). Smith has created a narrative that entrances its readers, constantly giving us excitement and depicting with audacity the rawness of sexuality. However, the text rarely explores the complexity of coming out in a contemporary environment, reverting to hypersexualized stereotypes of gay men. Smith offers few glimpses into Sam’s life outside the arcade, with brief appearances by the genuine love interests and connections Sam has made, but quickly returns to the arcade—as if sex was the only thing on his mind or the only thing he was capable of. Nevertheless, Smith has crafted a daring and compelling debut that sheds light on a rather unusual lifestyle. A sexy and poignant novel that could have done well with a more original exploration of gay mores.

The Magick of Dark Root: A Paranormal Fantasy (Daughters of Dark Root Book 2)

The Magick of Dark Root: A Paranormal Fantasy (Daughters of Dark Root Book 2) “There are rules that must be followed, Maggie.” “Even in witchcraft?” “Especially in witchcraft. What someone puts into the world comes back to them.” “You mean karma?” “Like karma, yes. But for a witch it comes back threefold. Never forget that.” “That doesn’t seem fair.” “Who said life was fair?” In the second installment of The Daughters of Dark Root series, Maggie Maddock and her sisters are back, training under their coven-leading mother Miss Sasha Shantay to take over as the new leaders of The Council. If you are interested in reading the entire Daughters of Dark Root Series I suggest you begin with The Witches of Dark Root as the second book contains spoilers for the first book. The Witches of Dark Root (Daughters of Dark Root Book 1) Kindle Edition by April Aasheim (Author)

The Witches of Dark Root (Daughters of Dark Root Book 1) Kindle Edition by April Aasheim (Author) "There are some secrets darker than witchcraft." - Dora Maddock Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest is a small village called Dark Root, a town steeped in magic, mystery, and secrets. But for Maggie Maddock, Dark Root is also a prison - a place where she is forced to work in her mother's Magick Shoppe while the rest of the world moves forward without her. When a mysterious stranger offers to take Maggie away from it all, she leaves without looking back. Seven years later, Maggie is called home by her beloved older sister. There she is confronted with a renewed sibling rivalry, a mother suffering under a mysterious illness, and a town that's lost it's literal magic. Now Maggie must decide if she will use her newfound abilities to aid those she loves or run from her responsibilities once again. In the tradition of Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic and Rebecca Wells' Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, The Witches of Magic seamlessly weaves the past with the present, the magical with the mundane. It is a tale of family, forgiveness, and the healing power of love that will leave readers believing in magic long after the story ends. Review "The story was full of action, drama, and just really interesting. I found myself finishing this book in about three days and that was because I had to chase after my children. I strongly recommend this book and I am positive you will enjoy it just as much as I did. My hat is off to you author for doing such a great job on your story through and through." - Librarything Review Jennifer35k "I loved how this book showed the magical side to life, love and family. It transports you to the town Dark Root and makes you want to be a part of bring it back to life. I can't wait to read the second part of this story and see what happens next with these sisters. This book was a greatread, I very much enjoyed it and would recommend it to others!!!" - Goodreads Review Theresa El-Thomas About the Author April Aasheim spent her childhood traveling around the Southwestern portion of the United States with her gypsy mother and her get- rich-quick stepfather. During those years she spent time traveling with the carnival, living in an abandoned miner's shack, and learning to read Tarot Cards. After spending her early adult years in California, Tennessee, and Arizona, she finally settled down in Oregon where she has lived for the last decade. April is a mother, a wife, and a reluctant homemaker. She has written several short stories and maintains an active blog. The Witches of Dark Root is her second novel. This was a really rewarding read I laughed and cried and wondered what would happen next. The Witches of Dark Root (Daughters of Dark Root Book 1) The interaction of the sisters was really real and it kept me reading. They were well defined characters that I could easily see as real in my mind. I am big on characters. I loved that they were so different but the love that held them together practically jumped off the page at you. They had left Dark Root because they wanted to find out who they were without the influence of a Mother with a really strong personality who wanted them to follow in her footsteps. Like all teens they wanted to fly on their own. This is a really believable part of the story. They did not prosper while they were gone and neither did the town, which they immediately started restoring, which was not quite as believable. However, there were a lot of life lessons in the story and the magic was only part of the solution. The plot kept me on edge. I could not put the book down. A couple of places it did not jive like at the first of the book it said the bookstore was closed and just after that before the shops had reopened it said a women went into the bookstore. The there was the accent of the aunt I did not understand why she talked that way. It was like she was not quite right and she was suppose to be a wise elder. But on a whole I loved book, in fact, I'm eagerly awaiting the sequel. Join our community and receive 20% off everything on the site

Book review by Judi Singleton of End of Eternity by Loretta Lost

She thought her life was getting better.
Until she found her new husband hanging from a chandelier...

Six months pregnant and devastated, Carmen Winters is forced to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Before she can even begin to grieve, she finds herself being pursued by Bradford West, her late husband's best friend. Brad's strange behavior puzzles Carmen, but she is too distraught and overwhelmed to push him away.

As she grows obsessed with understanding the madness that took her husband, Carmen finds her own mind unraveling dangerously to the brink of insanity. She is convinced that her sister Helen was the last person to see her husband alive, and might have some information about his death.

When a kind doctor named Owen takes an interest in Carmen's well-being, she finds herself slowly beginning to recover. His infectious sense of humor is able to distract her from her misery, and she finds herself leaning on her new friend for support.

But Carmen doesn't know that there are darker events to unfold that could destroy what little sanity she has left...

***This is book one of a series. Expect cliffhangers. The Clarity series is the prequel to End of Eternity.**

Review

"End of Eternity" is an amazing story - written with depth, passion and poetry. 5+ pure-intensity stars.  - The Book Enthusiast

Loretta Lost's writing style is like a force of nature in End of Eternity. - F. Reede

Ms. Lost's words are, once again, unrivaled by many authors. It pops and is fast-paced enough for the modern reader by being fun and to-the-point, yet almost has a vintage-like vibe of a very experienced classical romance author. - Paige Turner

Loretta has done it again by writing a story that grips you from the first page, satisfies you throughout, and leaves you wanting more at the end. - Sam, Goodreads

Judi's review Despite all the good reviews on this book I found it on the verge of porno and just no plot. The  characters were weakly developed and I don't think anyone acts like this in the real world.   Carmen Winters is pregnant but has sex with her husbands best friend on the top of his coffin. Then she stays all night snuggling with a man she just met. She states she cannot raise this child alone. She just likes being married. Nothing wrong with that but she says she was deeply in love with her husband who went mad and committed suicide.  But only a day goes by before she is involved with someone else. I got this for free, it was a real time waster so I did not buy the series.

Alison’s Journey: Author: Amey Tippett Book Review by Judi Singleton

The dedication in this book is a work of poetry in itself. I had a distinct recollection of ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’ when reading this book, but this story has some very unique twists and turns. The characters seemed very real to me – I live in a small town and we are just like that!

Here, we are shown the psychological cycle of the victim of domestic violence (Alison) and her growing awareness that some things can change for the better, trust can be had and given, and faith in inner strength can grow.

Like many who crawl out of hellish conditions, Alison did not do it on her strength alone, but through a few strong, giving individuals who contributed a gesture or a friendship along the way. Yet, most healing of all is to find a new, healthy love and good, solid relationships with others – a most difficult thing for victims of abuse to do. If it was the author’s intent to use the main character to bring depth and understanding into what people go through in situations like these, then she accomplished this goal admirably!

Readers are shown how being rich, good looking and well-educated – having all the benefits one could desire - cannot lead to happiness. Mr. Bruce Cockburn says it best in a song of his which says ‘though chains be of gold, they are chains just the same’.

Amey Tippett has accomplished a work of art with this book. I really felt like I was right there watching the children play during the festivals and feeling the pain and fright of impending danger, and endured the hellish nightmares along with Alison.

This was a fantastic read and I would not hesitate to recommend Alison’s Journey.

Angel On Board by EJ Thornton' review by Judi Singleton

Editorial Reviews Review One of the best angel books I have ever read! Angel on Board is a masterpiece of fiction, but it isn't fiction - not really. This is one of those angel books that will stay with you FOREVER! Angel On Board felt like it was written just for me. It'll feel that way for you too! It helped me get through some of the toughest days of my life! The parallels to my life were astounding! I lent it to a friend who lost her mom. She was so grateful she read it when she did, it helped her cope through her grief. And said she would read it again! So I gave it to her and bought another one... It is that awesome!!! --Vicki Steffan, author I've been able to find peace with mom's passing. I highly recommend it to anyone going through loss. I can sense when my guardian angels are working with me... This is one of those angel books that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. I don't know how, but it was very healing for me to read. Thank you EJ Thornton. About the Author Born in 1961, EJ is a devoted Christian. She began writing Angel on Board over 4 years ago. The character of Jeannie in the book is closely modeled after EJ. The writing of this book was inspired by real events in EJ's life. All through the period of the pregnancy of her son, EJ felt an extra dimension of protection around her and her unborn child. The pregnancy was unexpected and the grandfather of the baby died just a couple of weeks before the child was conceived. The connection EJ felt with the baby's father's father was unlike anything EJ had ever experienced. Many of the human events in the book depict real events. EJ never aspired to be a writer, but this book wouldn't let her rest until she put in on paper. The angels definately helped her author this book. Goodness! When you begin to peruse this blessed messenger book, the characters (even the dead ones) wake up. You get acquainted with a radical new measurement and it is amazing! On the off chance that you never had confidence in blessed messengers, you will after this. The portrayals and the symbolism make it so natural to see this occurrence surrounding you - even while you're perusing the book. You ponder who may be understanding it with you! You're completely serious - keep an eye out for blessed messengers looking out for you! I altogether appreciated "Heavenly attendant on Board," The story was profoundly amusing and imaginative and consoling for anybody whose family has had a great deal of what is considered on this plane of presence as catastrophe. Most interestingly as you read it, you find that it appears to clarify a considerable measure of seemingly insignificant details that happen in everyday living also, or possibly we simply begin searching for them. Whatever the case it is a gift Biography EJ Thornton's first novel about guardian angels was named Angel On Board and it started her on career as an author, but what she didn't know at the time is that those same guardian angels were launching her career as a publisher. Frustrated with the publishing options available for a first-time author, EJ Thornton set out to create Books To Believe In - a publishing business that worked for the first-time author's book and all their subsequent books.
